"Safaris from Zanzibar: 6 Common Questions"

What parks are best for a Tanzania safari from Zanzibar?

When embarking on a safari from Zanzibar to Tanzania's mainland parks, a short flight is usually needed, possibly with a stop in Arusha or Dar es Salaam.

For a safari from Zanzibar, the northern region of Tanzania is my top pick. Discover Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater—highly recommended destinations. These spots are close to Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Parks, which are fantastic for wildlife viewing if time allows. Visiting all four requires at least 10 days.

Consider exploring Nyerere National Park in the south for diverse landscapes and abundant wildlife, including elephants and lions. Adding Nyerere extends your trip by at least 3 days. With extra time, visit Mikumi National Park and possibly Ruaha National Park for a true wilderness adventure.

How many days is recommended for a trip from Zanzibar?

The duration of your Zanzibar safari will depend on your destination preferences. If you have 3 to 4 days, it's best to focus on one park such as Nyerere or the Serengeti. With a few extra days, you can explore additional parks like Ngorongoro or Lake Manyara. If you have 10 days, you will have time to fully explore the Northern safari circuit or multiple parks in the south.

Contact us for combined Tanzania safari and Zanzibar packages. Many visitors to Zanzibar also explore the mainland, so there are plenty of options available. Remember that minimizing flights can help reduce safari costs.

Is a Serengeti safari possible from Zanzibar?

You can combine a visit to the Serengeti with a stay in Zanzibar by choosing from many tour options that offer this possibility. Typically, this entails flying from Zanzibar to Arusha in northern Tanzania and then taking another flight from Arusha to one of the airstrips in the Serengeti. Alternatively, you can also drive from Arusha to the Serengeti and explore other attractions along the way, such as Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater, although this will require additional time.

The Serengeti is truly worth the visit and ranks as one of my top parks in Africa. The wildlife here is simply amazing. This is especially the case during the great wildebeest migration, which you can see at different stages from January to August or September. But any time of year is good for wildlife viewing in the Serengeti, where you'll see the big cats, elephants, and so many other species.

Should I go on a fly-in trip from Zanzibar?

When planning a safari from Zanzibar, it's important to consider that flying is the most preferred mode of transport. While there are ferry connections between Zanzibar Island and the mainland, they are much slower and less convenient for travelers heading to Tanzania for a safari.

Most often, after flying from Zanzibar, you will arrive in Arusha or Dar es Salaam. From there, you have the option to catch a flight to your chosen national park.

Although flying is more expensive than driving, it allows you to make the most of your vacation time for safari activities instead of spending it on the road. Moreover, you'll get to enjoy breathtaking aerial views. Choosing an air transfer provides a scenic and exciting experience, and there's an undeniable appeal to landing in a national park surrounded by wildlife after a picturesque flight.

How much does a Tanzania trip from Zanzibar cost?

To estimate the cost of a Zanzibar to Tanzania mainland safari, you need to take into account several factors. Generally, you can expect a minimum cost of US$300 per person per day for the safari from Zanzibar. However, prices can go up to three times that amount for more luxurious packages. These variations are influenced by factors such as accommodation. Staying in luxury tented camps is much pricier compared to going on a budget camping safari.

The frequency of flights can also significantly impact costs. Other considerations include the duration of the safari, the timing of travel (high-season prices may be twice as high as those in low season), and the specific type of safari chosen (for instance, a private safari incurs higher costs than a group safari).

Can you do a classic safari on Zanzibar Island?

A classic safari is not possible on Zanzibar Island. You might find some wildlife parks on the island, but they are more like zoos, and visiting them is nothing like going on a real safari in one of Tanzania’s parks.

If you want to experience a genuine safari during your visit to Zanzibar, talk to your tour operator about the possibilities. They can recommend destinations and wildlife viewing options accessible by flying to the mainland. Before discussing this with them, it's important to conduct your own research and have a clear idea of the specific animals you wish to encounter. If your interest lies in observing big cats and elephants, then locations like the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and Nyerere are all outstanding choices.

If, on the other hand, you’d like to follow in the footsteps of Jane Goodall and spend time tracking chimpanzees through the forest, then Gombe and Mahale Mountains National Parks (in the far west of the country) should be high on your list.”
